Orca Eats Shark As Snack

Comments

Orcas don’t typically eat sharks. In New Zealand, where this amateur video was shot, orcas usually feed on seals, sea lions and whales.

But occasionally shark — in this case, sevengill shark — is the dish du jour. And when that’s the case, orcas will amass in teams to herd the fish into the shallows and incapacitate them with gnashing teeth and tail cracks. Then, the beasts go in for the kill.

In this video, one lucky shark escapes the melee by beaching itself on the shore. But even on dry land the fish gets harassed, this time by one of the whale’s distant terrestrial relatives. The shark later returned to the ocean during high tide.
