Last month, a group of Adrenalists up in Northstar, California attempted a multitude of first-time snowboarding tricks and combinations that are virtually super-human. First-ever tricks are harder to come by nowadays, so we should salute them when they’re even attempted. This group of Adrenalists, however, not only attempted these spectacular first-time jumps, they actually landed them.

First, Emil Andre Ulsletten stomped the first ever Switch Backside Triple Cork 1440. Then, Torgeir Bergrem landed the first ever triple cork 1620, seen above. The triple cork 1620 seemed like a fantasy film come to life. Though Gergrem isn’t 13-year-old Marcus Kleveland, it’s still pretty incredible to watch the four and a half rotations of the triple-cork 1620.

Then, in the same week as his fellow Norwegian daredevils, Brage Richenberg landed the first ever snowboard double backflip off the knuckle of a jump. The knuckle is the part of the landing where the flat part meets the sloped landing area. Instead of going over the traditional jump, Brage boarded past the jump and hit the knuckle decline fast enough to back-flip twice before stomping the landing and sending the onlookers into a frenzy.

The Adrenalist honors these extreme snowboarders because these tricks have never been done before, and because tricks like these are always better when they’re firsts. There’s no telling what they’ll do next.

Snowboarders don’t think of their snowboards as a piece of sports gear, but as an extension of who they are. In some ways, the snowboard is almost another limb. It is a reflection of who owns it, and how they shred. Whether it’s the art on the board, the various dings and nicks its accrued during its adventures, the binding edge, the stance, or the way its brim has been winnowed down by an icy stretch of mountain, a snowboard is as personal as it gets in the singular world of snowboarding. That’s what makes Travis Rice‘s Pass It On project so amazing.

The project itself is simple. Travis is taking one of his boards and sharing it with the snowboarding community to be passed on from person to person in 3 day intervals. The board is a Lib Tech 2013/14 Speedodeeps that Travis rode for the 2012/2013 season.

If you’re one of the lucky few who get a chance with the board, you can sketch on it, shred with it, sticker it, take pictures with it, but then you “Pass It On.” You’ll only get three days with the board, but you can add whatever idiosyncratic touches you want. It’s an art movement spearheaded by one of the sport’s greatest ambassadors.

This is gonna be awesome, so make sure to let us know if you come into possession of one of the gnarliest snowboards around: the community board from the #passitonproject.

For avid skiers and snowboarders, there is nothing quite like a blanket of fresh powder to kick off the New Year. So when Montreal was hit with a record-setting 1.5 feet of snow over the first weekend of 2013, snowboarder Seb Toots decided to take advantage. Instead of heading out to one of many ski slopes or regular trails, however, Toots decided to board down Mount Royal, which overlooks the center of the city.

Produced by Sunset Films and lead editor, Mathieu Cowan, the short film documenting Toots’ ride starts with gorgeous overhead shots of a frost-bitten Montreal with snakes of ice lapping the edges of the St. Lawrence River. Then, you see a lone figure, Toots, walking in thigh-high snow to the edge of the park at its peak, with a wonderful vista of the city. He snaps into his board and barrels off the rail. From there, we get to watch Seb spring from drop-offs, barrel down stairs, grind long rails and follow a narrow path through the woods. There are some eerie and fantastic shots of him jumping and spraying snow through a graveyard before finally blasting through the air for a full on helicopter, complete with hands up after his landing to warn onlookers to be careful of his speed. Cowan intercuts shots of Seb’s incredible skills with squirrels and other furry rodents that are less impressed with Seb’s skills, but no less curious.

Toots reaches the nadir of his voyage after a crossing a street, naturally still on his board, confusing nearby pedestrians as he whooshes down a lean line of grass next to parked automobiles.

Toots and Cowan filmed this whole thing in just two days after the big storm. You’d be remiss if you didn’t check it out.

Every year at this time, action sports fans and athletes flock to the yearly Snowboard Jamboree: the platform for the 2013 FIS Snowboard World Cup. This year, the event runs from Jan. 15 to Jan. 27 at Stoneham Mountain Resort in Quebec, Canada.

Six events and 11 competitions will be held across 10 days. The agenda includes all kinds of dry and icy snowboarding disciplines. Think half pipe, slopestyle (various tricks including grabs, grinds, spins, and flips), snowboardcross (a twisting group race) and Big Air (tricks performed after launching off a man-made jump built for the event). Amateur races, fashion shows and parties are also part of the adrenaline-pumped picture.

First held in 1996, the FIS Snowboard World Cup now takes place every other year. The event gives riders points toward achieving Olympic selection.

Conditions are looking good, with snow falling thickly in subzero temperatures on Stoneham. The sport on show at Stoneham has a modern feel, but everything actually dates back to the 20s. Then, boys and men lashed plywood or wooden planks from barrels to their feet with clotheslines and horse reins to steer themselves down hills for the thrill.

The birth of modern snowboarding came in 1965. Then, engineer pioneer Sherman Poppen from Michigan built the “snurfer:” a prototype snowboard that a manufacturer eagerly snapped up and mass-produced, fueling a winter sports craze that looks unlikely to lose momentum.

Cut your snowboard in half, screw on some handlebars and hop onboard. Try snowscooting and get your snowboarding, scooter riding and mountain biking fix all in one.

Black Mountain‘s Snowscoots cost between 1,161 and 2,190 Euro, but maybe you want to be the early bird and snag one before they become a worldwide sensation. Snow scooting is authorized at resorts all over Europe, but this unconventional sport has yet to really catch on in the U.S.

What you see above is probably the most professional snow scooting video ever shot. Featuring world snow scooting champion, Fabien Cousinie, and his friends scooting the snows of Tignes in France’s Northern Alps, this 6-plus minutes of footage does a good job showing us what the sport is all about: good, clean fun.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the riders have a bounty of fresh powder under their boards. We can’t imagine a snowscoot operates so awesomely when the snow is sub-par.

Speaking of 22-month-old’s doing amazing things, here’s one showing himself to be a very capable snowboarder. Demanding a combination of strength, balance, and awareness, snowboarding is something that many full-grown adults can’t handle, or at least can’t handle as well as this kid does. So use this as inspiration next time you try and get back on the board.

1080 degrees. One spin is 360 degrees. So 1080 is… we’ll give you a second to do the math.

Yeah, it’s three full spins in one jump.

And Kelly Clark’s successful 1080 was the first ever completed by a woman, marking a landmark in extreme sports that will hopefully be matched more and more as time goes on. Next step: the 1260.

Art overlaps with adventure in this short vid filmed by visual artist Jacob Sutton.

Put yourself in the rider’s goggles, wrapped in blinding LED lights, compelled down the mountain and into who knows what obstacle lies below.

And then in the trees…

It’s an adventure for the rider, a thrill for those of us who watch.

Snowboarding master Travis Rice just keeps going bigger. He’s been pushing the edge of possibility on the snow, in the air, and behind the camera for a decade, and is the rare sort who’s known as one of the greatest of all time in each of those domains.

The dude can fly and is hot off of the fall release of his epic, aptly-named film The Art of Flight, in which stunning footage catches him and his peers going to absolutely unprecedented locations with nothing but snowboards, adrenaline, and airtime.

His next project, Supernatural, brings the best backcountry and contest snowboarders in the world to Nelson, British Columbia for an extreme combination of backcountry and contest course, with requisite cameras and helicopters aplenty. The result seems to be nothing short of living up to its title, and this video clip is one of the first glimpses into the legendary gathering. Supernatural airs as a two-hour special on NBC on March 31st.

The Adrenalist caught up with Travis in Nelson last week to work on a collaboration we’ve been developing with him for a while. More on that later.

It’s big.
