Surf Channel Hits Cable Television

Don’t cut that cord just yet. In a couple weeks, cable TV providers will add a rad new Surf Channel to their on-demand offerings.

“The Surf Channel will be a sports channel, travel channel and lifestyle channel all in one,” says the channel’s founder Steve Bellamy, who previously launched the Tennis Channel and the Ski Channel.

While tennis and skiing are far more popular than surfing in the US, there will be no shortage of viewers for the new on-demand channel. The Surf Channel will be free to anyone with a cable deal through Comcast, Cox Communications, DirecTV or Dish Network. In total, the Surf Channel is expected to be available in more than 20 million US homes.

That doesn’t even take into account viewers who will catch the action through a computer. The Surf Channel has secured a deal with YouTube, where it aims to build a flagpole web portal for surf videos.

The Surf Channel will launch in mid-September, just as summer in the northern hemisphere is winding down. It’s first screening? Endless Summer. What else?
