Espen Fadnes Talks Wingsuiting

When you’re tearing down a mountain at more than 100 mph, skimming just feet above certain death, the past doesn’t exist and the future doesn’t exist. There is only now.

That’s how Norwegian wingsuit star Espen Fadnes feels about his favorite pastime. It’s one of several inspiring sentiments expressed in the short film “Split of a Second,” which follows Fadnes from all angles – even from inside a gondola – as he wingsuits through rarefied air in Chamonix, France.

“It’s a choice I’ve made, making people who care about me worry,” Fadnes says. The Fadnes family indeed has had plenty of reasons to worry – more than 1,000, in fact. That’s how many BASE jumps and wingsuit flights Fadnes has completed over the years, including one in which he broke his back and another in which he nearly drowned.

Don’t expect Fadnes to switch jobs anytime soon, though. He will be competing in the World Wingsuit League October 17-18 with the chance to secure a top three finish and rake in some pretty sweet prize money.

Some risks can pay off in more ways than one.
