This winter, backcountry skiing and snowboarding will finally get one, glorious championship event.

After months of speculation, it has been confirmed that the three largest extreme skiing and snowboarding tours in the world will merge to create one unified, six-stop tour: The Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face. The tour will take riders and skiers across the globe, with stops already confirmed at Revelstoke, Canada; Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France; Kirkwood, USA; Fieberbrunn PillerseeTal, Austria and the finals in Verbier, Switzerland.

The massive event supplants 3 smaller tours: the Freeskiing World Tour, The North Face masters of Snowboarding and the Freeride World Tour.

Already, 47 men and 19 women have qualified for the world tour. More skiers and riders will qualify by placing in lesser big mountain events held across the globe, including competitions in Chile and New Zealand  in August.

The first World Tour event kicks off January 7, 2013 at Revelstoke in British Columbia.
