Pretty soon you’ll have no excuse for starving in an air pocket after being buried alive in an Antarctic avalanche. The palm-sized DeLorme inReach accesses a satellite network that can “see” from the North to the South Pole, sending pre-loaded messages to email, cell phones, Facebook and Twitter with the push of a button. The device also relays location information — or a “bread crumb” trail, as DeLorme likes to call it — so friends can follow your trek in real-time online. Attach an Android phone to the inReach and you can text from anywhere in the globe. If Aron Ralston ever landed on this blog post, he probably closed the window before he ever got to this sentence. The inReach will be available in October with subscription plans costing $10 a month.
